Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen Visits NJAWBO Morris

Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11th Dist.) spent a full day with members of the Morris County chapter of the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners beginning with a chapter breakfast visit and then visiting several woman-owned businesses and chapter members throughout the county.

On May 3, the congressman took a day from his busy schedule to talk about different issues facing the 11th district and women business owners in Morris County.

Frelinghuysen, a resident of Harding Township, began his day at the Oxford Learning Center in Whippany at the NJAWBO breakfast meeting where he met with members and affiliates. The Congressman talked about the March 2010 flood that affected portions of the district as well as the controversy over the Pompton Lakes Dam's role in the flooding. He listened to personal accounts of members who were affected by the flooding . New Jersey was declared a federal disaster area on April 2, making federal disaster relief funding available to affected residents of the nor'easter storm which affected the area March 12 through April 15.

Also at the breakfast, the Congressman spoke about the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" which was enacted and further amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 on March 30, 2010. Congressman Frelinghuysen noted the new act would pose an economic threat to small businesses and that the new law would make it more expensive for businesses to offer health care to their employees. He provided copies of the Committee on Ways and Means Republican Report prepared on March 18, 2010, outlining the specific negative impact that the legislation would have on small businesses.

Another full report that provides in depth financial affects of the new act is also available at Frelinghuysen's website. This report was prepared by the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. "We at NJAWBO encourage all businesses who offer health care to their employees or who have the potential to offer it in the future to educate themselves on the specifics of this legislation and what it means to your individual business," said Lynne Delcalzo, a member of the NJAWBO State Legislative Relations Board and vice president of public policy for the Morris Chapter.

Congressman Frelinghuysen also talked about the reforms of the financial industry that would affect Wall Street, investment firms and financial institutions and federal procurement for women- and minority-owned businesses including a proposed new SBA rule on the Women's Procurement Program, which would allow contracting officers to restrict competition to women-owned small businesses in 83 industry categories, based on the NAICS code.

After the breakfast, the Congressman and his district staff assistant Bernie Tyson visited three NJAWBO-member businesses. They were accompanied by Delcalzo of LMC Financial Management Services, LLC, and Robin Tabakin of Technoforce, LLC. Delcalzo is also a member of the WIPP Northern NJ Instant Impact Team. Tabakin is a member of the NJAWBO State Legislative Relations Board and the team leader for the WIPP Northern NJ Instant Impact Team.

Zimmerman Architects of Denville, owned by twin sisters Faith and Hope Zimmerman, was the first stop on the tour. The full service architecture firm handles a variety of projects, although the sisters' prefer to focus on custom residential projects.

Next up on the tour was Coastal Financial Group of Montville, which is co-owned by Thomas Tyson and Ratchanee Benson. Coastal Financial Group, along with Coastal's NJAWBO representative Tina Piccininni, is a full service general/master agency for major health insurance carriers serving the tri-state region.

The last stop on the tour was Refeather Your Nest of Mendham, a redecorating design firm owned by NJAWBO member Susan Hayes. Hayes and decorator Tamara Hageneder, transform rooms and makeover homes by using the furniture and accessories already in the home. Debra Houston, vice president of finance for the Morris County board, also attended.

During each visit, Congressman Frelinghuysen met with the business owners and their staff to discuss the issues and challenges that they are facing in today's global and national economic climate on a business as well as personal level. The meetings were lively and informative, Delcalzo said.
